Starting Work Before 10 AM Is Similar to Torture, Oxford Scientist Says

A scientist at Oxford University, Dr. Paul Kelley, has recently made a discovery that may affect almost all of us.

He examined a series of modern day forms of torture and found that waking up and going to work before 10am is one of the more common ones.

According to Dr. Kelley, forcing ourselves to wake up every day earlier than our organs and brain are ready means that we’re violating our own body clock, which is also known as our Circadian Rhythm. This body clock is pre-programmed and cannot be changed. Fighting against it means we’re fighting against our natural body lock and that can have very bad affects against our health.

Dr. Kelley says that lack of sleep is a global problem. Starting before 10am causes sleep deprivation, causing emotional and physical stress. This also leads to more dangerous health risks.

To test out his theory, Dr. Kelley worked with a school in the United Kingdom where he changed the start time from 8.30am to 10am. They found that after a period of adaptation, the attendance level and general productivity greatly improvement. There was also a major improvement in students’ grades.

As Dr. Kelley says:

“It is hugely damaging on the body’s systems because you are affecting physical, emotional and performance systems in the body…”

So, why do we still torture ourselves?

The 8 hour working days were created at the beginning of the 20th century to maximize the productivity of working in factories. At the time, they didn’t consider the human body clock which wants to be coordinated with sunlight, not the requirements of increasing productivity at the factory.

Unfortunately, we are still mired in this system and we’re not living in a society that is created for how our bodies operate in nature.

If we were to get enough sleep, we would have overtired people at work, we wouldn’t need to drink so much coffee and we wouldn’t destroy ourselves by partying when the weekend comes around.

When everyone would listen to their bodies and woke up naturally, their work would be much more productive and focused and they would be happier overall.
