If you’re anything like me, you’re bothered by all of the uncertainty and tension in politics. Since the election of Donald Trump, there seem only to be winners and losers, rather than any attempt to truly understand the other side.
This is where Zen wisdom has a lot to offer in helping to adopt a perspective of compassion and understanding of others.

There are scientific benefits to being compassionate. It’s not just about helping others; you’re also helping yourself.

A simple perspective on being more compassionate
If you haven’t heard of him already, Thic Nhat Hanh is a master spiritual teacher and his advice below is something I believe we all need to hear. Check it out:
“When you plant lettuce, if it does not grow well, you don’t blame the lettuce. You look for reasons it is not doing well. It may need fertilizer, or more water, or less sun. You never blame the lettuce. Yet if we have problems with our friends or family, we blame the other person. But if we know how to take care of them, they will grow well, like the lettuce. Blaming has no positive effect at all, nor does trying to persuade using reason and argument. That is my experience. No blame, no reasoning, no argument, just understanding. If you understand, and you show that you understand, you can love, and the situation will change”
Hate, blaming, violence will never lead to anything positive. We need to make the effort to understand each other. We’re all rational human beings and we all have our reasons. The more we understand, the more we can progress.
