One of the trending topics on Ideapod has been love and what it really means. It’s one of those concepts that you know when you feel it but it’s very hard to explain.

Legendary Zen Master Thich Nhat Hanh shares his wisdom on what love really means in this quote:

“Through my love for you, I want to express my love for the whole cosmos, the whole of humanity, and all beings. By living with you, I want to learn to love everyone and all species. If I succeed in loving you, I will be able to love everyone and all species on Earth… This is the real message of love.”

He continues: “You must love in such a way that the person you love feels free.”

In my reading of this, there are two important ideas to consider. The first is that we experience love through feeling connection with others and the whole cosmos. Love comes from breaking through the illusion of separation, understanding there’s unity between everyone and everything.

The other idea is that we love doesn’t come from the feeling of control, but instead can be felt through the act of surrendering. When we let go, we are able to let the feeling of love flow through our lives.

I shared a video on the Ideapod Facebook page a few months ago which came from a discussion with my good friend and fellow entrepreneur Bella Acton on “the other side of love no-one speaks about”. We were talking about how to handle break-ups, and during the discussion I shared my idea of what love means. Here it is.

What do you think about love? What does it mean? Why is it so important? Let me know in the comments below, or respond to me on Ideapod where I’m always sharing my ideas.
