It can be hard to tell if someone is a genuinely nice person or if they are only being nice to you because they need something from you.

Unfortunately, many people are only out to help themselves, but there are still lots of genuine people walking around on the planet.

Here’s how you can spot a genuine person from a fake person.

1) Always Thinking of Others

The genuine person will always ask the opinion of others and will consider all sides of an argument before making a decision that will impact other people.

The fake person will find ways to put themselves first and benefit from decisions they make.

2) Not Hard to Please

The genuine person will set expectations and will work with you to find ways to meet those expectations.

The fake person is always trying to one-up you, make you feel inferior to their position, and make sure you know how smart they are.

3) Don’t Need the Spotlight on Them

Genuine people are happy to take a backseat to those who deserve the praise instead of them. You’ll see this in many great leaders who give credit to their teams instead of taking it all for themselves.

Fake people, however, will impress upon others how much work they did and leave the teams to the wayside.

4) Humble and Kind

The genuine person will not want to be praised, but instead will want to celebrate the victories of everyone. They act in a way that makes you feel like they care about you and others.

Fake people will want lots of attention and will not hesitate to show off their victories.

5) Uses Candor and Honesty

Candor is the easiest way to tell a genuine person from a fake person. The genuine person will bring up issues without malice and will work with you to improve on shortcomings.

The fake person will give avoid telling you what is wrong and talk about you behind your back, rather than have to face the issues head on.

6) Actions Speak Louder Than Words

If you are struggling to determine if someone is genuine or fake, look to their actions. Do they do what they say they will do? Do they act on their promises? Or do they continually say one thing and do another?

Fake people will wow you with their great ideas and words, but will rarely deliver on those words.

7) Works in Service of Others

Genuine people know that the best way to get ahead is to work in service of others. Whether that means going out of their way to help a coworker or taking a paycut so their employees don’t lose their jobs, working in service of others people be more genuine to themselves and their communities.

Fake people will put their needs first, making sure they are taken care of above all else.

Watch for genuine people in your company. They are worth hanging on to. Watch for people who only care about themselves and who are willing to push people out of the way to get where they want to go; fake people can destroy someone’s reputation and their happiness.

Be diligent about the kind of people you want in your life and always look for signs that a person is being genuine.
